Vino di Anna ‘Palmento’

Vino di Anna ‘Palmento’ Rosso is a natural red wine made high on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Named after the traditional Sicilian winemaking facility—the palmento—this wine reflects the region’s ancient heritage and winemaking culture. It is fresh, fragrant, and full of volcanic character, thus offering a snapshot of Etna’s unique terroir.

The wine is a field blend dominated by Nerello Mascalese, complemented by small amounts of other indigenous varieties such as Nerello Cappuccio, Alicante, and Grenache. The fruit comes from old bush vines grown on sandy, mineral-rich volcanic soils. These vineyards sit at elevations between 760 and 900 meters above sea level. As a result of Etna’s cool climate and dramatic diurnal shifts, the grapes retain excellent acidity and freshness.

Prior to fermentation, Anna Martens and her team harvest the grapes by hand. They ferment a portion of the wine in an old palmento—an open-air stone vat traditionally used for treading grapes by foot. The rest ferments in neutral vessels like old oak and concrete. Fermentation is spontaneous, using native yeasts. The wine is made without fining, filtering, or the addition of sulfur.

Vino di Anna ‘Palmento’ is vibrant and pure. It opens with aromas of sour cherry, herbs, and smoky minerals. On the palate, it’s juicy and light-bodied, with a stony backbone and a lively, mouthwatering finish. Although easy to drink, it offers real depth and energy.

Vino di Anna is a small, independent estate led by Anna Martens and Eric Narioo. They focus on organic farming, minimal intervention, and expressing Etna’s character through each bottle. Subsequently, Palmento Rosso embodies that ethos—an honest, living wine that celebrates both tradition and place.
