Vincent et Marie Tricot ‘Escargot’
Vincent et Marie Tricot ‘Escargot’ – a heartily expressive, Jurassian-esque Chardonnay that keeps one in the throes of trickery. Mischievous and misleading, this is a 75 centilitre vessel of saline rotundity that offers an outrageously fresh mineral structure. Vivacious and suave, Vincent and Marie have brought us a windshield-wiper of palette-detoxification; initially coating our jowls, it proceeds to cleanse them. Soaring like a peregrine in a tailspin is an articulation of ripe orchard pear, bramley apple and lemon zest. Sending ripples across the tongue is a perfectly balanced acidity and eye-squinting aromatics send shivers down the nape. The herbal underbelly knots the bow on this robustly-wrapped gift; wild mint and sage tincture harmonise with the saline conclusion.
Vincent, Anjou-born, discovered “le monde du vin naturel” and his love for it while helping Jo Cotton with a Beaujolais harvest . Having globe-trotted, doing stints in various wineries, he, his wife and two daughters moved to an Auvergne whistle-stop called Orcet. Wielding vast stores of passion and knowledge, they were determined to produce low-intervention wines. Moreover, Vincent was aware of the concentration of pre-phylloxera vines that dominated this region, a rare, opportunisitic blessing. Having been lucky enough to assume control of a site that had been working organically since 1971, they purchased 4.5ha of vines. Since 2011, they have been making wines without the addition of sulphites, focusing on terroir. Evidently, this powerhouse duo, married in both matrimony and philosophy, are aware of the mighty faculties possessed by Auvergne soils.
Vincent et Marie Tricot ‘Escargot’ – hand-harvesting the 45 year-old vines, the Tricots have again harnessed the kineticism of these basaltic soils. That symphony of limestone, clay and basalt moves through the wine like an effortless chord progression. Emerging in curling riptides of sensory satisfaction is a ceaseless energy, a hungry display of fervent power.
