Vincent et Marie Tricot ‘Desiré’

Vincent et Marie Tricot ‘Desiré’ 2022 bottling is a striking example of Chardonnay cultivated on the unique volcanic soils of Auvergne. Sourced entirely from old vine stock, the fruit grows on a mix of clay, limestone, and basalt soils, imparting a natural mineral energy to the wine. This rare volcanic terroir, with soils rich in basalt, endows the vines with a distinct sense of place that is expressed beautifully in the bottle. These vines, originally planted in 1973, are organically farmed without chemicals or synthetic treatments, following a philosophy that respects both the land and the natural character of the fruit.

On the palate, Vincent et Marie Tricot ‘Desiré’ is full-bodied and lush, showing a round, fruity profile layered with subtle oxidative notes. Aromas of pear, marzipan, and delicate white flowers create an inviting bouquet that is both complex and refined. The wine is vinified naturally with spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, using only the native yeasts present on the fruit and in the cellar. After fermentation, it undergoes malolactic conversion and is then aged in neutral barrels for nine months, allowing the Chardonnay’s inherent richness to shine without any overt influence from new oak. No fining or filtration is used in the winemaking process, and no sulfur dioxide is added at any stage, resulting in a wine that is both vibrant and authentically expressive of its volcanic origin.

Vincent & Marie Tricot, Auvergne

Vincent Tricot, originally from Anjou, was inspired by his first encounter with natural wine during a harvest with Jo Cotton in Beaujolais. He and Marie, eager to make a natural wine that embodied a sense of playfulness and authenticity, acquired a small plot of 4.5 hectares in the early 2000s, later expanding with additional plantings to over 10 hectares in total. They were particularly drawn to Auvergne’s extraordinary concentration of pre-phylloxera vines, a rare opportunity for any vigneron. Their approach to winemaking, perfected over years of experimentation, has been fully free of added sulfites since 2011, producing wines that are pure, lively, and easy-going in the best possible sense.

In ‘Desiré,’ Vincent and Marie’s vision comes to life: it is a joyful, unpretentious wine meant for gatherings, conversation, and conviviality, showcasing the energy of the Auvergne terroir in every sip.
