Nicolas Carmarans ‘ Fer de Sang’

Nicolas Carmarans ‘ Fer de Sang’ – an ethereal wine that manages to encapsulate the wild beauty of the region from which it comes. Plump, suave and luxuriantly textured, black plums and cherries bowl one over in tidal waves. Followed by a timely undercutting of black olive, touches of Doc Marten leather and BBQ smoke warm both nose and palette. This is an unapologetically fruit-forward expression of this local varietal that complements its vibrant zeal with subtle candied aromas. Carmarans presents us with a bombastic elixir that punts one from this world into another, cackling hysterically while doing so. Sourcing his grapes from  Marcillac, the vines average 70 years of age. Furthermore, they are grown on limestone soils at an approximate elevation of 250 metres above sea level. He places the grapes in fibreglass tanks to undergo a 10-day carbonic maceration. Finally, he transfers them to old barriques for seven months.

Carmarans has vines planted on the decomposed granitic soils of Northern Aveyron. Previously, he ran the renowned Parisian wine bar Café de la Nouvelle Mairie- it, as its name suggests, acts as a meeting place for like-minded folks to bask in good company and better wines. Having sold it in the mid-2000s to focus on his vineyard, he concentrates his efforts on tending to small, indigenous varietals and works to lend them the limelight. Displays of fervent passion and humble chasms of knowledge have allowed the vigneron to cultivate an honest reputation. He continues to explore these grapes’ natures, henceforth allowing his cuveés to evolve in beguiling fashions each year.

Nicolas Carmarans ‘ Fer de Sang’ – a jubilant song of praise, a paen if you will, to a starkly stunning region. A vividly boisterous bottle of exuberance that provokes soulful conversation and amicability. To be shared with close friends; to ignite kinship.
