Marc Pesnot “La Folle Blanche”

Marc Pesnot “La Folle Blanche” is a crisp, mineral white wine from the Loire Valley. It shows aromas of citrus, and preserved lemons. Dry on the palate, with salinity and a fresh, electric acidity. A great pairing for seafood and shellfish or grilled chicken.
The Folle Blanche variety was historically used to make Cognac in the south-west. The grape has thin skins, and struggles to reach optimum ripeness. To get around this, the local AOC permits as much as 300kg of sugar to be added for each hectare farmed. Marc Pesnot eschews this practice, however, preferring to work naturally and with minimum intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar. Pesnot cares for his vineyards organically, harvesting lower yields, only when they are ripe.
Grapes are harvested and destemmed by hand. Then pressed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in fibreglass tanks. The wine then rests for around a year, this wine is unfined, lightly filtered, and bottled only with the minimal use of sulfur.

Based in Saint-Julien-de-Concelles in the western Loire, Marc Pesnot organically farms around 18 hectares of old vines (~90+ years) grown on schist; granite and gneiss, utilising biodynamic practices in the vineyard. The grapes he farms are Melon de Bourgogne (aka Muscadet) and Folle Blanche. The climate here is moderate and oceanic, with the Gulf Stream nearby providing a warming influence from the Atlantic Ocean.
