“Frangy” Rousette de Savoie – Bruno Lupin

“Frangy” Rousette de Savoie by Bruno Lupin is a white wine made with the Rousette (A.K.A Altesse). Citrus-y freshness, with delicate aromas of white flowers. Subtle oak giving slight creaminess on the finish. Rousette, a low-yielding, late-ripening grape that is widely grown throughout Savoie in the French Alps. Rousette is known for it’s aromatic quality, high acidity, and suitability for aging.

While the wine is off-dry (>4g per litre of residual sugar) the grape’s high acidity compliments and balances this. Whole bunches are spontaneously fermented with natural native yeasts in stainless steel vessels. Partial malolactic fermentation takes place, providing a pleasant balance between body and freshness. This structure and acidity contributes to the ageability of this wine.

This Rousette de Savoie is from the village of Frangy, one of 16 villages given Cru status under the Savoie AOC. High altitude (~500m), moderate summers and cold winter temperatures make this region well suited for winemaking. The Rousette for this Frangy is from ~30 year-old vines grown on calcareous clay soils in the south-facing site of ‘Les Aricoques’. Lupin works lutte raisonnée (roughly translating to “reasoned fight”). Referring to a farming approach that minimises the use of agrochemicals and interventions, using them only when absolutely necessary rather than as a routine practice.
