Foulards Rouge ‘Les Vilains’

Foulards Rouge ‘Les Vilains’ – a suave and supple blend of 80 year-old Carignan and Grenache vines. The grapes are hand-harvested before undergoing a whole-bunch carbonic maceration for 15 days. Subsequent to the blending of the free run and press juice, there occurs a six-month ageing in old oak barriques. In any case, patience sweeps across the entire process, a feature that reveals itself on the palette. Bursting forth is a vivacious myriad of juicy red fruits, bolstered by a grinning candied by-line. Sweeter spices and a rustic herbaceous component roll over each other like breaking tides, lingering doggedly on the back-palette. A delightfully plush yet remarkably amicable red wine.

Jean-Francois Nicq, a Lille native, completed a two-year oenological course in Macon, Burgundy. Here, he met Thierry Puzelat of Clos Tue-Boeuf fame, who introduced Nicq to the idea of natural winemaking. Subsequently, he brought these concepts to Vignerons d’Esterzagues, a Rhone based cooperative where he spent the best part of a decade attempting to perfect his craft. In 2002, he took over his current domaine, expanding it from 10 to 12 hectares, most of which were composed of gneiss and schist soils. His vineyards are spread across several plots around his village, Montesquieu-des-Albéres, all of which incorporate organic and biodynamic principles. Some of the land is ploughed by horse and there is very little intervention in the cellar. Furthermore, carbonic maceration is used for most cuveés, imbuing the wines with a distinctly fresh, fruit-forward expression. Obviously, purity and decisiveness run amuck across Nicq’s elixirs.

Foulards Rouge ‘Les Vilains’ – a sleek homogeny of unbridled energy and brooding complexity; subtle tickles of earthier, spicier notes augment the explosive fruit structure.
