Clos Tue Boeuf ‘La Butte’
Clos Tue Boeuf ‘La Butte’ – a boisterously rustic, Touraine-based Gamay that is sure to render one breathless and beaten. Do not be fooled by its pleasantly light hue or its propensity for chilling, this is a thunderclap of wine. Marching from the glass are vibrant, nay, ferocious, red fruit aromas battling with beastly savoury tones for the limelight. This backbone of red liquorice and wild sage descends into a foxglove-esque floral underbelly that adds an uplifting vibrancy to this vessel of farmyard. Furthermore, quiet licks of pink peppercorn pleasantly surprise on the finish, one which lingers zealously. The Gamay vines range in age from 40 to 65 years old and are harvested by hand. The grapes are pressed in whole-bunch clusters and spend six to eight months ageing in old oak casks.
The Tue-Boeuf estate has a history that dates back to the Middle Ages, as does the Puzelat name. It is fabled that wines produced here delighted royal tables, enabling the bibulous tendencies of Kings and Queens. Be these tall tales or facts, the Puzelat brothers took their time to seize control of the estate’s reigns. Initially, Jean-Marie took over in 1990, having had many fruitful experiences in Champagne, later followed by his brother in 1994, who had pampered Bandol and Saint-Emilion vines. Subsequently, they converted the estate to organic vine-growing in 1996. Here and hitherto they have not swayed from hand-harvesting, low-intervention vinification and long barrel ageing. Le Clos Tue-Boeuf grows 10 hectares for the Chevernt AOC label in Les Montils and four hectares for the Touraine counterpart in Monthou-sur-Biévre. In any case, the seclusion of their vineyards from other agricultural areas augments and balances their respective ecosystems.
Clos Tue Boeuf ‘La Butte’ – a fearless exemplar of the Puzelat ideologies. Evidently, a hallmark of terroir-driven viticulture, superbly dignified.
