Clos Tue Boeuf Cheverny ‘La Gravotte’

Clos Tue Boeuf Cheverny ‘La Gravotte’ – clean precision acts as a common denominator across Puzelat wines. This blend of Sauvignon and Chardonnay clones is no exception; an unyielding freshness dominates here. Harbouring a more robust nature than some of their other cuveés, this is a perfect amalgamation of mellow aromatics and mineral poise. Initially exuberant, an unadulterated fruit expression leaps from glass to nose. Dancing citrus, yellow apricot and a touch of lychee tantalise the nose as a subtle herbal underbelly incites a taste. Broad and suave on the palette, a jowl-biting acidity is challenged by plush textural tones as a well-placed herbaceous note detoxes the tongue. Obviously, the grapes were hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and the wine was neither filtered nor fined.

The Tue-Boeuf estate has a history that dates back to the Middle Ages, as does the Puzelat name. It is fabled that wines produced here delighted royal tables, enabling the bibulous tendencies of Kings and Queens. Be these tall tales or facts, the Puzelat brothers took their time to seize control of the estate’s reigns. Initially, Jean-Marie took over in 1990, having had many fruitful experiences in Champagne, later followed by his brother in 1994, who had pampered Bandol and Saint-Emilion vines. Subsequently, they converted the estate to organic vine-growing in 1996. Here and hitherto they have not swayed from hand-harvesting, low-intervention vinification and long barrel ageing. Le Clos Tue-Boeuf grows 10 hectares for the Chevernt AOC label in Les Montils and four hectares for the Touraine counterpart in Monthou-sur-Biévre. In any case, the seclusion of their vineyards from other agricultural areas augments and balances their respective ecosystems.

Clos Tue Boeuf Cheverny ‘La Gravotte’ – yet another deliciously exact viticultural achievement with a tireless drinkability. A demonstration of the precision of their winemaking techniques; poised and dignified.
