A Taste of The Jura

Friday 18th June. Taste THE JURA with us!

As we start preparing for indoor dining, this sadly will be one of our last boxes….for now!

But being devoted followers of natural wine, our journey would not be complete without a trip to the Jura – the Mecca for natural wine lovers, where the mere mention of names like Ganevat, Overnoy or Bruyère-Houillon sets natural wine enthusiasts’ hearts aflutter.

Nestled between Burgundy and the Swiss border, this tiny region in eastern France produces some of France’s most distinctive wines. If Burgundy is mainstream, Jura is offbeat. Traditionally, more famous for its Vins Jaunes (slightly oxidised white wines matured under a veil of yeast, similar to sherry) more recently, the Jura has been creating quite a storm with its non-oxidised whites.

The wines are as unique and radical as they are compelling. Today, any intentionally serious wine list must include at least one wine from the Jura. So, we thought it would be nice to show you what the fuss is all about.

The Jura is characterised by tiny holdings and extreme weather events, which means minuscule production. Nevertheless, its terroir attracts some real avant-garde winegrowers. One such grower, Patrice Beguet, based in Arbois-Pupillin makes amazing wines under a variety of labels. For this week’s box we have chosen a wine from his Big Bunch Theory label, which he uses to produce blends using grapes from his own vineyard in the Jura and from friends’ vineyards outside the Jura. The Fresh Impressions Blanc is a blend of Pinot Gris (Alsace), Grenache Blanc (Provence), Melon de Bourgogne (Loire) with Plousard from the Jura. The result is a super vibrant wine, full of life, with fresh flowers and white fruit aromas, herbal, zesty flavours that fill your palate and do a little jig on your tongue.

You may not be familiar with its wines, but you’ll definitely have heard of its cheeses! Comté, Mont d’Or, Morbier to name but a few. So to honour this dairy-rich region, this week’s box will have a very cheesy flavour, which might just include a mini DIY fondue kit as well as a selection of other tastes from the region.

Next week will probably see the our virtual touring coming to a stop, so if you haven’t had a chance to join the journey yet, we strongly recommend you jump aboard! Box €50 for 2 ppl. Orders to info@latitude51.ie  by midday Thurs. Collection Fri 18th from 4.45-6.30 #jointhejourney
