Friday 28th May Taste GERMANY with us

WEEK 20 – who’d have thought?!! When we started our virtual wine adventures back in January we thought we’ll just do this for 4 weeks – a little bit of escapism to get us through the dreary winter months. 5 months on, and we’re still globetrotting to some of the world’s most exciting wine regions. And we’re not done yet!

We heard the weather might finally be taking a turn for the better this week, so we decided to take a chance and head north to Germany: to the village of Deidesheim in Pfalz to taste a seriously delicious and complex Riesling made by one of Germany’s oldest and most prestigious wineries, Weingut von Winning.

Founded in 1849 and practicing organic farming, Von Winning produces the most internationally renowned dry wines in Germany. The Von Winning philosophy relies on respectful cooperation with nature, with no use of chemicals in the vineyard and low intervention in the cellar. Going against the more common (and less expensive) use of stainless steel fermentation, all of Von Winning’s Rieslings are fermented in oak barrels of different sizes, which contributes to their structure and complexity.

This Deidesheimer Riesling is one of the estate’s gems. The palate is juicy nectarine and citrus, with a touch of smoke and herbs, a huge wash of acidity brings you through to a silky smooth saline, mineral finale. A real masterpiece and the perfect wine to welcome the start of the (hopefully) good weather!

Pfalz is a fascinating region steeped in wine history starting with the Celts who brought the grapevine here, further developed by the Romans who laid the foundations for what is today one of Germany’s leading wine regions. It has one of the mildest climates in Germany which endows it with an impressive store of fresh produce Food and wine are intrinsically linked and deeply rooted in Pfalz culture. The many food and wine festivals are testament to this!

We’ve had a lot of fun trawling through regional recipes to find the best tastes to pair with this week’s beautiful wine.
