Fri 21st May – Taste SIERRA DE GREDOS & MADRID with us! (L’Atitude-at-Home Box orders by midday Thurs 20th May)
Fasten your seatbelts, Sierra de Gredos here we come! We’re veering off the beaten track this week to a mountainous region just an hour outside Madrid where old vine Garnacha reigns supreme. The Sierra de Gredos mountain range spans the central Spanish appellations where old vines, some of which are over 100 years old, have inspired young winemakers to preserve these magnificent vines to produce some of the highest quality Garnacha in Spain.
The varied soils, microclimates and extreme altitude combine to produce powerful Garnachas with impressive tannins, heady aromas, and a complex mixture of spice, minerality, and earth. There’s nowhere else producing Garnacha quite like this.
Our favourite producer from the region is Alfredo Maestro. Alfredo grew up amongst the vines, but is predominantly self-taught. He began reading winemaking textbooks and purchasing fruit to make wine for personal consumption until he eventually made it his livelihood. He has always favoured a-less-is-more approach both in the vineyard and in the winery to make “easy wines with character imprinted with the earth and the vintage and not modified by the hand of the man in the cellar.”
For this week’s box, we’ve chosen his delicious ’El Marciano’ which comes from 70-year-old Garnacha vines grown at an incredible 1,150 metres. It’s an ethereal wine with powerful acidity, red cherries, and mineral notes…and extremely moreish!
The label is a nod to the many UFO sightings in this mountainous region.
The region boasts some of the richest and most delectable cured meats, sausages and cheeses. Its cuisine has been influenced by the bordering territories and by Arabic, Jewish and Christian cultures, each of which have contributed recipes to create an interesting fusion of cuisines. Lots of choice for this ‘otherworldly’ Garnacha!
€50 for 2 ppl. Orders to email@example.com by midday Thurs. Collection Fri 21st May from 5-6.30 #jointhejourney
