A Taste of Morocco

Fri 2nd April – Taste MOROCCO with us! (L’Atitude-at-Home Box orders by midday Thurs 1st April)

We’re heading south this week to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. It might come as a surprise to some that wine is produced in Morocco, but wine has been made in North Africa for at least 2,500 years, but with a history of ups and downs. Winemaking came to a halt when much of North Africa converted to Islam. Then, due to France’s colonial influence in the early 1900s, Morocco returned once again to winemaking.

Most of it produced on the sunny plateau around Meknes. Sheltered by the Atlas mountains and open to the cooling influence of the Atlantic, these regions are perfect for the growth of red Rhone varieties.

Our wine this week comes from Domaine de la Zouina, an estate which dates back to the early 20th century. It is rich in history and tradition and is home to beautiful vineyards and olive trees set in the tranquil Moroccan countryside.

Made by well-respected Bordeaux winegrowers Gérard Gribelin (Château de Fieuzal) and Philippe Gervoson (Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion), Volubilia Rouge is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvedre and Tempranillo. It has a beautiful nose of red and blackcurrant with a touch of game. The palate is rich, ripe & smooth with concentrated red berries, hints of leather and mocha, but ending with juicy freshness and soft tannins. A wine that can hold its own against some of the top estates in Southern France. It is a perfect ally for food.

To say we are excited about this week’s destination would be a slight understatement. There are so many colourful ingredients and flavours to choose from, we’ll find it hard to narrow it down. As usual we will choose a selection that we think will marry best with the wine.
