Vino di Anna ‘Bianco G’
Vino di Anna ‘Bianco G’ – harbouring understated complexity, this mouth-watering white erupts with a terroir-driven slap. A thunderclap of a nose tickles the nostrils with ripe stone fruit, lemon peel and lime zest; it begs to be glugged. An eye-squinting acidity rolls over both teeth and gums, bringing with it a terrifically balanced smokiness. Nevertheless, that volcanic-born minerality and the chuckling sapid finish offer an incredible length; it coils around the tongue. Finally, reverberating whispers of straw and pepper wipe the palette clean and insist upon a refill. Composed mainly of Grecanico, the grapes are hand-harvested and the majority are macerated on their skins for one week. The remainder are whole-bunch pressed, undergo malolactic fermentation and age on fine lees for 12 months.
Anna Martens, co-founder of the winery, is a formally trained oenologist from Adelaide. She was on a direct path to Super-Tuscan production before meeting her now-husband, Eric Narioo, who is a household name of natural viticulture. He is MD of the incredibly successful wine importing company ‘Les Caves de Pyrene’ and is responsible for the erection of a myriad of natural wine bars in London. The couple traversed through southern France, exploring the philosophies of many influential natural wine-makers. Consequently, Anna’s fascination was immediate; together they sought a region that would challenge them and landed upon the unknown terraces of Mt. Etna. ‘Vino di Anna’ is a small, family wine estate, situated high on these slopes near the village of Solicchiata. The black, decomposed lava or the iron-rich red clay soils here help to create a beautiful uniqueness. These are truly terroir-driven wines.
Vino di Anna ‘Bianco G’ – a nuanced showcase of Sicilian terroir and climate. Evidently, it offers a Peregrine-esque focus to a mineral structure that can only be birthed by unspoiled volcanic soils. Honestly poised.
