Hacienda Grimon ‘Rioja Reserva’
Hacienda Grimon ‘Rioja Reserva’ – a shimmering exemplar of the Rioja Alta region. Brooding and patient, this harmonious Tempranillo blend is a vessel of complex contemplation. With small percentages of Graciano and Grenache, each varietal is manually harvested on the same vineyard. The must is co-fermented in stainless steel for between nine and twelve days, the skins are pressed and the wine rests on its own lees. Subsequently, there occurs between twelve and twenty-four months of ageing in oak, a process that enables the juice’s distinctive traits to blossom. Initially searing the nose with arrays of ripe red and black fruits, amarena cherry and dark plum mingle with liquorice. Pinches of wild mint soothe the palette as that ripe complexity gains traction. Finally, black pepper and smoky hints stroll arm-in-arm across the back-palette with nuances of vanilla. Gradually unfurling, this is undoubtedly a bottle for the fire-side.
The winery was established by Paco Grimón in 1999, a member of a family with a tapestrial viticultural tradition in Rioja Alta. The Oliváns are proud to espouse their wine-making lineage, particularly that which reflects the region. With 25 hectares in the Valle de Jubera, they do not employ any herbicides or pesticides across their plots. Sheep manure is used in their stead as fertiliser and the grapes are harvested by hand. 75% of the vineyards are planted to Tempranillo with 15% to Grenache and 10% to Graciano. The selection process of their grapes is undertaken with the utmost care as many of their cuveés are subject to extended ageing. An inarguably specialised hallmark of Rioja Alta.
Hacienda Grimon ‘Rioja Reserva’ – in short, Christmas in a bottle. A winter-warmer that never fails to put a smile on one’s face.
