Domaine Mosse ‘Chenin Blanc’

Domaine Mosse ‘Chenin Blanc’ – luxuriating mastery of boisterous rusticity; a fanatical fever-dream of viticultural prowess. This is a wine that embraces you. Swaddling the tongue in swathes of buttery aromas, it teases the back-palette with promises of ceaseless conclusions. Surging forth with the vehemence of an invading army is an initial waft of reduction; indicative of an elixir unspoiled. However, hastily following are vivacious notes of baked apples, ripe orchard pears and welcome punches of stone fruit. An emphatic by-line of straw and butterscotch plunge one into mesmeric disbelief. Entrancing polka-dots of apricot cream and marzipan send shivers down one’s nape. Finally, a taut touch of wet-stone flintiness cleanses the roof of one’s palette. Refreshed, that garland of vigorous aromatics reverberates in lingering fashion.

Domaine Mosse was established in 1999 by a couple married in both matrimony and philosophy. Angés and René Mosse were quick to recognise the potential of their surrounding soils and the climate that birthed them. For just over two decades, this estate has been a stalwart producer of stunningly honest wines; an expression of environment and passion. René trained under the tutelage of Puzelat and Chaussard before completing a short Burgundian stint. Sons, Joseph and Sylvestre – glad inheritors of a winemaker’s life- gained globe-trotting experience in various viticultural posts before taking the helm in 2018. All their plantings are manually harvested, the cluster kept in its entirety before being sorted. The vines have been organically farmed since the estate’s erection, with biodiversity being introduced across all vineyards.

Domaine Mosse ‘Chenin Blanc’ – undergoes a slow, pneumatic pressing before ageing on fine lees for six months in old wooden barrels. Just one of many cloud-parting cuveés that this 15ha powerhouse produces, elegant and vulnerable. A plump, textural white that challenges, seduces and hypnotises in just one savoured sip.
