Domaine Breton ‘La Dilettante’, Loire
Domaine Breton ‘La Dilettante’ in the Loire is a fantastic example of a Vouvray Sec. It’s a wonderfully rich Chenin Blanc with luscious pineapple and peach fruits and plenty of life. It’s a wine that gives the slightest suggestion of sweetness but is balanced beautifully by the racy acidity. At a mere 12% alcohol, it is light, yet juicy.
The Chenin Blanc grapes come from 40 year old vines, which are grown on sandy-silica-clay soils. As exponents of a ‘natural’ winemaking philosophy, the Bretons aim to get the healthiest grapes possible to the winery. They allow the fermentation to start spontaneously with indigenous natural yeasts. The wine is matured in 600l old oak demi-muids for 8 months. Before bottling it is lightly filtered off the gross lees, but undergoes no fining. A mere 10mg/l of sulphur is added at bottling to stabilise it.
